How Solar Works — and Why Temperature Matters

Solar PV panels capture energy from sunlight (not heat) and convert it into electricity through a process called the photovoltaic effect. However, temperature can slightly influence efficiency — panels perform best on bright, cool days when their internal temperature stays near 25 °C.

ConditionEffect on Output
Cooler weather (15–25 °C)Slight increase in efficiency
Hot weather (35 °C+)Small drop — typically 5–15%
Cloudy daysReduced sunlight, but panels still generate power from diffuse light

Panels have a temperature co-efficient (usually around –0.4 % per °C). That means for every degree above 25 °C, output drops by roughly 0.4 %. In Ireland’s mild climate, that’s not an issue as your panels rarely overheat and often perform better than in hotter countries.

The Science Behind It

  • Solar panels convert light (photons) into current, not heat. Warming a panel doesn’t increase the sunlight hitting it — it affects how well the panel can turn that light into electricity.

  • As a panel’s internal temperature rises, atoms vibrate more vigorously. That extra vibration makes it harder for electrons (energized by photons) to escape and generate usable current.

  • Conversely, when panels are cooler (but still well-lit), electrons face less “resistance” from atomic vibrations, improving conversion efficiency.

Environmental and Economic Advantages

  1. Free, Renewable Energy:
    Solar energy is
supplied by nature, it’s free, abundant, and available across Ireland. Once installed, your panels produce power directly from sunlight without fuel or emissions.
  2. Low Maintenance & High Reliability:
    PV systems have
no moving parts, meaning fewer breakdowns than wind or hydro systems. Maintenance is minimal, occasional cleaning and inspections are usually enough.
  3. Sustainable and Future-Proof:
Solar PV plays a major role in Ireland’s renewable energy future, supporting national carbon-reduction goals while lowering household and business energy costs.
  4. Government Grants & Incentives:
The Irish Government, through SEAI and other programs, offers generous grants for residential, commercial, and agricultural installations. This makes solar energy a smart, supported investment, not just an eco-friendly choice.
